I started looking at dnd 4e, which seems way more balanced and fair, fixing most issues that dnd 5e has. sure it looks more gamified, but it actually allows for more customization for roleplay matching with mechanics, and its less convoluted with its rules. it still doesn't allow for some stuff like "effort" or improvisation, but neither does.
