The Watchers 2024 Review Cgmagazine Rated: 2.5 4 jun 28, 2024 full review adam nayman the ringer the watchers is not nearly as cerebral; it's less a political (or showbiz) allegory than a fable about our shared capacity for change. “the watchers” is the first film directed by ishana night shyamalan, the 24 year old daughter of m. night shyamalan. its title refers to a race of spindly ash gray monsters who haunt an irish woods, gathering at night around a concrete fortress where the film’s four characters have holed up in a state of semi permanent refuge. The twist explains how she knew so much about the watchers, their history with people, their burrows, and the rules to stay alive in the forest. unlike the rest of the watchers, however, madeline was different because she was part human. long ago, when the watchers were still living alongside people, some of them had children together. Our review: parents say (2 ): kids say (6 ): an interesting premise and talented cast can't save this shyamalan family affair from being a middling horror flick that skimps on world building. it's quite possible that shine's book spends more time explaining the context of the central mystery, but the movie's third act twist is so poorly.

At its best when following the claustrophobic atmosphere of a chamber piece, the watchers falls apart in the final act as the story expands beyond the forest. more characters are introduced to explain, but the film never quite gets under our skin the way a lasting horror film should. the apple doesn’t fall far from the shyamalan tree, though. Runtime: 102 min. u.s. release date: june 7, 2024. ishana night shyamalan has no doubt grown up on movie sets and started watching scary movies at an early age. having served as a second unit director on her father, m. night shyamalan’s last two films (“old” and “knock at the cabin”), she has since taken the task of helming her first.
