As families across the country get ready to head to the beach for the memorial day holiday weekend, the surfrider foundation is pleased to release the 2021 clean water report. this comprehensive annual report highlights the successes of our blue water task force (bwtf) and ocean friendly gardens (ofg) programs in 2021, and features case studies of chapters leveraging these clean water programs.

Record Breaking Year For Blue Water Task Force The blue water task force (bwtf) is surfrider’s volunteer water quality monitoring program that provides critical information to protect public health at the beach. surfrider chapters use this program to raise awareness of local pollution problems and bring together communities to implement solutions. In 2022, 59% of the samples at chocolates exceeded state standards compared to 95% of the samples in 2021. kahaluʻu is located in a priority 2 cesspool area, meaning that there is known wastewater contamination. kahaluʻu, hakipuʻu, and waiāhole are furthermore all characterized by high concentrations of coastal cesspools. Since the inception of the blue water task force program more than 25 years ago, surfrider volunteers have been out in their communities testing water quality at the beach. now a large national network with approximately 50 chapter run labs, the blue water task force measures bacteria levels at nearly 500 ocean, bay, estuary and freshwater.
