Whare A Whare Or Maori House Excavated At Te Wairoa Waiвђ Flickr Mt tarawera erupted in the early hours of the morning (12.30am) followed by the explosion of lake rotomahana which buried te wairoa village under a blanket of mud 1.5 2 metres deep. approximately 153 lives were lost; 17 from te wairoa village. sophia was the heroine of the night. The first excavation began in 1931 of a whare (house) which shows the depth of volcanic material that destroyed te wairoa village. other excavations have been done nearly every decade since then; with the last excavation in 1986 of the rotomahana hotel. at each excavation site; interpretive panels explain the sites' history.

The Buried Village Of Te Wairoa Te wairoa was a māori and european settlement founded about 1850 by the reverend seymour mills spencer where visitors would stay on their way to visit the pink and white terraces. The buried village is new zealand's most visited archaeological site, where stories of the 1886 mt tarawera eruption come to life. te wairoa was established by the christian missionary in 1848 as a model village, but survived for fewer. than 40 years before it, and the nearby pink and white terraces were obliterated by the eruption of mt tarawera.
