Provide materials such as string, a small bucket, and a pulley and challenge students to build a pulley system. have them experiment with different weights and heights to see how the pulley system affects their ability to lift objects. spools, dowels, or even a string tied to a paper towel roll can work as a pulley.

Provide materials such as string, a small bucket, and a pulley and challenge students to build a pulley system. have them experiment with different weights and heights to see how the pulley system affects their ability to lift objects. spools, dowels, or even a string tied to a paper towel roll can work as a pulley. Creative writing allows students to take what they have learned about community helpers and envision themself as a community helper. students always love this activity. all activities in this blog post can be found in my no prep community helpers social studies unit. you can purchase it for a week of rules and laws activities for $3. The machines must include at least two simple machines in their design. the machines must be able to move a 50 g (about 2 oz) rock a horizontal distance of at least 50 cm (about 11⁄2 ft). the machines must be able to move the same rock a vertical distance of at least 30 cm (about 1 ft).
