Lucky Baldwin Mine Big Bear Youtube The mine, also known as the “lucky baldwin” mine was the last major gold discovery in the area. in 1873, barney and charley carter were en route to the rose mine, when they camped along the north shore of baldwin lake. during this trip, barney climbed the hill to investigate some “shiny stuff” observed from their camp. The historic gold fever trail is a self guided driving tour through holcomb valley, the center of big bear's gold rush. discover the ruins and remains of belleville, the once lively miners' town. with a little imagination you can picture the old time miners with their gold pans in the creeks, their stamp mills in the field, their rowdy saloons. E. j. “lucky” baldwin passed away, and thomas h. oxnam purchased the gold mountain mine and mill in big bear from the estate. john (fritz) fisher and friends drove two model t ford runabouts from redlands to big bear via the desert road, arriving in the valley on the evening of june 26. Lucky baldwin mine overlooking the valley and baldwin lake, 2018. the gold boom of big bear was a fleeting one. after only 8 months of operation, big bear’s second gold rush was over due to poor ore quality. it shut down operations in 1875.

Elias j. “lucky” baldwin started a second gold rush in big bear with the construction of his 40 stamp mill at gold mountain. 1874 fighting five feet of snow, sam baird and four carpenters started construction of a house and blacksmith shop at the gold mountain mine. From the bellville townsite, the trail winds around gold mountain and drops back down to big bear near baldwin lake. this last leg of the trail brings the sites of ross’s grave, pygmy cabin, metzger mine and lucky baldwin mine into play. overall, the gentle tail offers probably the best one day tour of holcomb valley.
