Levi S Little Lectures Be Humble Torah Family Proudly humble. humility is often understood as the antithesis of arrogance. from this perspective, just as arrogance is an exaggerated sense of one’s own importance or abilities, humility is a gross underestimation of them. in truth, however, the outlooks of both the exaggerator and the underestimator are fundamentally self centered and. You must remember god, your god, for it is he that gives you strength to make wealth, in order to establish his covenant which he swore to your forefathers, as it is this day. (devarim 8:11 18) thus humility is the foundation of any relationship with god. to the extent that a person lacks humility is the extent to which he ascribes greatness to. The talmud (sotah 5a) while discussing the evils of arrogance, quotes what seems a dissenting opinion. it states that the torah scholar must possess “an eighth of an eighth” of pride. clearly, this opinion does not dispute the talmud’s overall condemnation of arrogance. it does, however, introduce a critical counterbalance.
