Jesus teaches the fear of god “whatever i tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. and do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? and not one of them falls to the ground apart from your father’s will.

For the unbeliever, the fear of god is the fear of the judgment of god and eternal death, which is eternal separation from god (luke 12:5; hebrews 10:31). for the believer, the fear of god is something much different. the believer’s fear is reverence of god. hebrews 12:28 29 is a good description of this: “therefore, since we are receiving. A matter of the heart. the fear of god is the heartbeat of our new life in christ and “the soul of godliness.” 1 as such, it is not the mere sum of certain behaviors, or something we can acquire with simple self effort. if it were, it would be an entirely superficial and infinitely less precious matter. 9 hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 create in me a pure heart, o god, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 do not cast me from your presence or take your holy spirit from me. 12 restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
