After rewatching arael's mind invasion of asuka, this scene from episode 9 is sooo heartbreaking once you tie everything together. asuka wanted shinji to sleep with her in this sequence, but he just didn't pick up on her reverse psychology leaving her upset after she closed the door. Asuka is a horrible person, probably not her own fault (single parent with mental problems, later committed suicide, highly intellectual so no real friends of her own age,et cetera). she's always trying to prove that she's better than her peers and be an adult (so kaji notices her). Suddenly, a beam of visible light shines down from the angel upon the eva. asuka is caught off guard and screams as she fires in blind panic causing damage all over tokyo 3. looking at the readings, ritsuko realizes that the angel's attack is similar to an a.t. field, and it is trying to penetrate the eva's mind.
