2011 A8l D4 Union Coolant Leak Youtube A8 s8 (d4 platform) discussion 4.2l coolant leak at union my 2012 a8l 4.2l started leaking coolant from the rear of the engine right before christmas. i finally had time to take some things apart and found the leak is coming from the coolant union on the rear of the engine driver's side. Similar thing happened last year to my 2011 4.2l at 117k miles. the plastic coolant crossover pipe had a crack and needed to be replaced. i finally got tired of topping off my coolant every few days and had an indie shop fix it for $1700. common issue, apparently. good luck! thanks for your feedback.

During this interval, the low coolant warning came up on the car twice. i topped it off both times and eventually had my mechanic replace a coolant union pipe behind the engine (a common point of failure on the 4.2 v8). this was done right before the oil change when the sample was taken. i thought this was where the coolant was leaking but now. I did end up using an metal pipe. the project took me actually 4 hours.if you start working on it and already know the steps, it can be done way faster.i rea.
