Notan For Beginners Youtube Notan is the foundation of the music in your painting. it introduces you to the three main types of notan structures you can use in your painting: two, three. Notan refers to the balance between light and dark elements. you can use notan studies to explore the different arrangements or patterns of light and dark elements. depending on how diverse the values are in your subject, you could use either a 2, 3, or 4 value notan study. most of the time, a 2 value notan is all that is needed. Using 2 pieces of paper that are the same size, cut one piece of paper down to half its length and width. this smaller piece of paper is what you will cut your shapes out of. you can either draw shapes on this paper with a pencil, or freehand cut shapes. draw lightly so you can erase later. A notan study and a value study are two very different things. a notan is not the value structure of the painting—it is the framework for that value structure, a subtle point that many beginners get wrong. a notan study helps you plan a painting from an abstract design point of view.
